I am Happy to be Showing in "Humans Merely Being" Exhibit

Humans Merely Being
Seven artists portray the unique beauty of the human image
and the strength of the human spirit

Tall Grass Arts Association in Park Forest is honored to present a new exhibit opening on January 25, 2020. Humans Merely Being includes works by artists Javier Chavira, Michael Chelich, Judy Fan, Jeanine Hill-Soldner, Jean Lewis, Jessica Smit Mattingly, and Lidia Wylangowska.

Each of the award-winning artists has created an impressive body of figurative and portrait works. The exhibit offers many diverse approaches to portraying human images through realistic and expressive approaches, as symbolic, evocative, or strikingly literal representations.

Through their knowledge of anatomy and their technical expertise with a variety of media,
the seven artists convey identity, action, expression and emotion. Inspired by a number of different artists, movements, and sources  – the great masters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods; the Symbolist and Pre-Raphaelite artists of the late nineteenth century; narrative and allegorical paintings; classical methods of realistic drawing and painting; the challenging lives of children from Mali and Kenya; the joy of families spending time together in Chicago; cherished moments with their own daughters and sons – they create personal works that often move us to recognize our similarities, our shared situations, our common humanity.

These artists and educators have been recognized with honors, commissions, solo and  group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. Their figurative works appear in numerous galleries and museums, in art journals and magazines, and in television   interviews and documentaries.

Working from life and photographs, the artists in the Humans Merely Being exhibit create what artist Jeanine Hill-Soldner describes as “fresh narratives, capturing the life, energy, movement, and excitement experienced in the moment.” Seeking to express the authentic beauty of the human figure, they often strive - as artist Jessica Smit Mattingly has stated her goals – “to physically portray the emotions experienced within, what lies beneath the surface, the larger stories and deeper meanings of our everyday experience.”

Curated by Claudia Craemer and Deborah Craemer, Humans Merely Being is on view
from January 25 through February 29, 2020, with an Artists Reception, open to all, on
Saturday, January 25, from 1-3pm.

"The Power of Three" Exhibition

“The Power of Three”
Group Statement

Chicago area artists Sandie Bacon, Anne Farley Gaines, and Jeanine Hill-Soldner have various elements in common in the work they will show in “The Power of Three”.  They are accomplished artists who work in diverse media producing colorful and powerful works of an environmentally-conscious nature. They find the mystery of organic elements endlessly fascinating, and they interpret these scenes in their unique styles.

The convergence of these similar, yet separate, visions and viewpoints creates a power and a resonance multiplied by three. Bacon’s work emphasizes the sheer force of nature and the subtle humor of animate kites with oriental influence; Gaines’ watercolors and ceramics capitalize on fragile beauty found in nature and surprise close-up details; Hill-Soldner’s richly layered oil paintings focus on figures interacting with water and drawing the viewer into narratives that are playful as well as contemplative.

This exhibit contains work of varying sizes and surfaces, ranging from smooth representational watercolors to richly layered oil paintings, heavily-textured mixed-media paintings and ceramics.  They are to be experienced for their sheer beauty, as well as to be contemplated as warnings to nurture certain environments and be careful not to compromise or destroy them. It is a visual collaboration that invites study and questioning.

Wall of Art

Gallery wall in my studio
This picture shows a wall in my studio that I use as a gallery.  Here you to see 13 oil paintings based on my photos from Crown Fountain in Chicago.  The paintings on the top row are all 24"x 24" and the 3 on the bottom row are 36"x 36" while the rest of the paintings are much larger measuring 48"x 60", and 48"x 36"  This large body of work features people playing in the refreshing water that sprays from the fountain in downtown Chicago. I started painting this series several years ago and as with all my work, there are many variations and transitions in the entire body of work.

This work has exhibited in many venues in Chicago and the surrounding areas and people seem to like it.  It's different.  I have always explored my own vision so that no one else is producing work like mine.  And I don't think anyone else could paint like me, except me.  So there you are, I am starting on new work now while I utilize what I learned in all of my past work and bring that knowledge and experience into the new work.
