I am thrilled that my work was chosen for the "Revolution 2012" exhibit at the

Jackson Junge Gallery in Chicago. I have been working on mixed media art for many years, but have few opportunities to exhibit the work. When I read the call for art for "Revolution 2012" I knew that I had a piece that I want to complete and enter. I'm always intrigued with the things that are a part of our every day world and represent, in my mind, a larger statement about the time they were made. This is the first of many more mixed media works that I've been working on and hope that I have more opportunities to exhibit, and sell them. Below is the press release that provides more info about my work and the exhibit.

Algonquinresident, artist Jeanine Hill-Soldner, will exhibit a large mixed media artwork titled “50 Stars, Buy 2 Get 1 Free” in the “Revolution 2012” juriedexhibit at the Jackson Junge Gallery in Chicago. Ms. Hill-Soldner is owner of Soldner Fine ArtStudio located in the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park in Crystal Lake. The Artist is best known for her oilpaintings that comprise the large body of work “Memories of an Era” and“Portraits of American Veterans Project”. The work in “Revolution 2012” represents the Artist’s use of mixed mediasuch as canvas, acrylics and CD cases to create new and exciting and many timesrevolutionary artworks. The artists’ statement reflects upon the current trendin US corporations to “outsource” jobs and manufacturing in order to increasetheir profits and improve their “bottom line”. This practice employs cheap foreign laborers to produce products thatare then sold in the US for very cheap prices. In the process the stockholders and corporations become wealthier whilethousands of US workers lose jobs thus the title “50 Stars, Buy 2 Get 1 Free”.

“Revolution 2012” is based upon the currentevents of the occupy movement that has been brought to Chicago, among manyother cities worldwide. This exhibit hopes to invoke ideas andimagery of where this revolutionary movement will lead us in the year2012. Being an election year, the emotions of change willinevitably be at the forefront of the media and general public.

Artists will showartwork that gives their artistic interpretation on what this revolutionarymovement brings to the attention of the general public. Some occurringthemes might include: Change, End Corporate Greed, Tax Fairness, EconomicInequality, Class War, Stop Foreclosure and Stand Up For the Middle Class. Interpretive art pieces with political, environmental,moral or socially relevant tones will be on exhibit.

Veterans Art Exhibit at GE Corporate Gallery

"My Third Grade Class" 6' x 7' oil on canvas

During the month of November 2011, I transported 6 of my large oil paintings from my body of work "Memories of an Era", to the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago. The paintings were crated and shipped to the East coast. I have been honored to exhibit my artwork, with the art by Veterans from the permanent collection of the NVAM at the GE Corporate Gallery in Fairfield, CT. Art Appraiser and Consultant Valerie Cooper at Picture That LLC contacted both the NVAM and me, in order to curate the exhibit for GE. The exhibit is designed to honor Veterans and their families during the time of Veterans Day. The title of the exhibit is "A Closer Look: Scenes from a United Family". I wasn't able to attend the artist reception or visit the gallery, but I can see from the web site that the show is very powerful and unique in the concept.

It has been a pleasure exhibiting my work with the NVAM at GE. I am also grateful that Valerie Cooper's vision brought about this exhibit that carries the message about the roles of the families in supporting our nation's Military Personnel. I hope that my work will find it's way to more exhibits around the U.S. and the world. Thank you Valerie Cooper and NVAM and GE.

A Special Day for Veterans at Truman College

I have been very behind on my posts. "So much to do and so little time" I couldn't let the year end without mentioning the wonderful event that Veterans Services Coordinator Adam Navarro Lowery organized for Truman College. The event was held on November 9, just a few days before Veterans Day. I was honored to help to set-up the tables and easels to display art by Veterans who have participated in the Vet Art Project. I also provided a few paintings of mine that had exhibited at the National Veterans Art Museum and therefore represented the NVAM. Suellen Semekoski was there and explained to visitors about the Vet Art Project and gave out materials to those who were interested. The Warrior Arts Studio was represented by one of the founders Matt Olsen. I also enjoyed meeting the President of Truman College Reagen F. Romali. President Romali told stories from her life while living and working in a oppressive Communist country. Her genuine commitment to educating Veterans for the work force certainly provides a welcoming environment for member of the Military who want to further their education and find jobs.

I look forward to participating in more art programs with the Vet Art Project. Thank you Adam for bringing all of us together for a valuable and well planned day.

I am showing the Portraits of American Veterans Project Exhibit at the following venues during the month on November. I am honored that my art work is on view in public places where the public is free to spend time looking at the paintings and reflecting on their stories. I have chosen to exhibit the paintings and provide an opportunity for the visual dialogue to emerge from the painting itself without additional descriptive text. I believe this allows more time for the viewer to look and consider their own personal experiences and stories.

I will present an Artist Talk with a Powerpoint program at each exhibit venue. I have found the presentation to be a powerful way to share the personal stories of each of the veterans. Thus the stories and paintings become a living oral history project that elicits participants to revisit their stories and share the experiences of the veterans in their families and communities.

In early June I loaned the painting on the right, "Snapshots and Memories" which measures 6' x 9' x 1 1/2" , for an undetermined period period of time to a local non-traditional exhibition space. At the time of the agreement and delivery of the painting I exchanged some paperwork and a business card with the individual who received the work. I unwrapped the paintings and placed them where I was told they would be installed. This was a large open foyer with a reception desk and lots of natural light from large windows. There were other works of art in the corridors of the building so I felt comfortable about the exhibition space.

I took pictures of the space and my work before installation for my records. Sadly the camera containing the photos was stolen from the artist tent at the Lakeside Fest in early July. So I don't have a visual record to provide me with clues as to the location. The paperwork must have been misplaced when I moved my office from one room to another in my house. I don't have a scrap of written record about the exhibit space.

I've been searching for a week for the painting and I have to locate it by Wednesday and deliver it to the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago for shipment to a corporate gallery on the East coast. Twenty Portraits of American Veterans, New Look and New Shows

I gathered all 20 completed portraits on my studio and found it challenging to hang all of them together at once. However, it was worth the time and effort to bring them all together like a gathering of friends. They all seem to be silently communicating their stories to one another with the eyes and gestures. I'll be creating some new promotional materials from the photo to let everyone know about upcoming exhibits.

In the future the Portraits of American Veterans will no longer be exhibited with the large, cumbersome, overdone profiles that appeared with the paintings in past exhibits. Most exhibition spaces are not large enough to show all of the paintings, much less the additional profiles. I will create new brief information cards that will not take up valuable wall space or distract from the paintings. In another words, the PAVP is moving into the next level of professional level presentation. There will be a notebook with the exhibits, providing freshly edited biographical info about each of the veterans. This will clean-up the overall look of the show and focus the viewer on the veterans and their images.

As the end of summer has approached it's time to think about the Fall and Winter art class sessions in my studio. I've been intensely focused on the "Portraits of American Veterans Project" for the last two years, with the 20th painting completed last month. Now I am turning my studio time over to new work and some new classes. I will continue developing the PAVP, moving into the writing, research and promotional phase with a few more portraits to add in the following months. I will post the new works as they are completed.

Oil Painting: A Fresh Approach Class: Adults and High School/ College

Thursdays 5:00 –8:00, 6 weeks sessions. 180.00 Begins 9/ 15- 10/27 (no class 10/6) I have taught this class at the Fine Line School of Art in St. Charles. Set-up a full color palette, mix and explore color theory, paint nomenclature,mediums and brush work, we will create a painting on canvas. Learn healthy alternatives to toxic solvents (no turpentine) while creating original and beautiful paintings. Materials list provided during registration. Minimum 4 students.

Portrait Painting Workshops: Adult Saturday Oct 1 & 8 , 10 am-3pm $120.00 A professional model will provide one 5 hour pose in Jeanine’s spacious and inspiring studio. Easels, tables, coffee. Call and Respond: From Atemisia to Freda at Oakton Community College

I finally sent off my entry for the upcoming juried exhibit at Oakton Community College's Koenline Museum of Art. The theme for this year is a challenge for artists to respond to the work of an influential woman from the past. I have posted my entry titled "Self Portrait in My Studio" and measures 48" high and 36" wide.

I am referencing the sixteenth century Italian artist Sofonsiba Anguissola. She was the first woman artist to gain international celebrity. She began training as a painter at a young age and her many self-portraits are also unique to sixteenth-century Italy. Sofonsiba was a pioneer of female self-portraiture, the first to show their pride in their talent. She became a renowned court painter, and was the first woman artist to have left behind at least fifty paintings as a well defined body of work.

I look forward to the exhibit and will enjoy seeing the way that other artists have interpreted the art by the women that we have to thank for paving the way for us today. I'll post photos of the event after I attend the opening reception in October.

Installing the 27th Annual Workshop for Contemporary Artists Show

Here are just few snapshots of the artists that comprise Workshop for Contemporary Artists. Pictured are Alice White, Judith Nahill, Nancy Seidler, Patricia Brutchin and Pat Tanner. We always enjoy the process of hanging the show, it is a team effort and we try to create a harmonious show with every artist showing their work in the best way. I have been in the art group for the past 13 years. I have learned so much about art, friendship, and life through these wonderful ladies.

I will post photos from the reception which is scheduled for Saturday August 27, 6:30 - 9:00 pm. at the Old Courthouse Art Center located on the Historic Woodstock Square, 101 North Johnson Street. Three Shows in One Month

This month has been very busy for me with exhibiting my work in three different venues. In previous posts you have views of the show "Honoring and Remembering" at Northern Trust Bank in Chicago. This show has been on exhibit since early July and has received excellent reviews and a few press features. I will pick-up the work after the deinstallation at the end of the month.
The second show was installed on August 2, and is pictured in these photos taken at the Elgin Art Showcase, an alternative venue that attracts a broad audience. This is a solo show, so I took the opportunity to exhibit some of my work from a few years ago. When I look at my work from the past few years I find it very rewarding that there is a cohesive flow from one body of work to the next. I have loads of work, and continually create new paintings and drawings, but I find there is change and growth as each year of work comes into being with virtually a life of it's own.
When I have an opportunity to exhibit my work I will usually say yes. I love the process of hanging a show and seeing the work come together in a new space. I always price the work and expect that there will be some interested buyers. This is the "icing on the cake" for an artist, to exhibit their work in as many shows as possible, the final cherry that makes it all come together is a load of interested collectors buying the art.
In the following post I will include photos from the third show this month, the annual Workshop for Contemporary Artists 27 Annual Exhibit at the Old Courthouse Art Center in Woodstock.

Capturing Sparkling Light Through Water in Chicago

I take a lot of pictures as reference for my paintings and drawings. I arrived early in Chicago before I was to present an art program for the Vet Art Project at the Chicago Cultural Center so I went to Millennium Park to see the wonderful sights at Crown Fountain. This was one of the hottest days of the summer, and in the City the heat is intensified by the radiant sun reflecting from the skyscrapers onto the street. The coolest and most refreshing location in Chicago is a Crown Fountain. I took off my shoes and just started taking photographs. I was delightfully surprised when I viewed the results of light and water radiating from above onto the humanity seeking refuge from the sweltering heat. This is just one from the collection. This is one of four photos that I have on exhibit in "Backstory" the annual Workshop for Contemporary Artists show at the Old Courthouse Art Center in Woodstock.

I'm showing 14 portraits from "Portraits of American Veterans" with the National Veterans Art Museum in a show titled "Honoring and Remembering" at Northern Trust Bank in downtown Chicago located at 50 S. LaSalle Street.

"Honoring and Remembering" will be on exhibit for the months of July and August. There will be an artist reception in August, I don't have a date yet but I will post it when it as soon as I know. Below is a brief description from the press releases that I sent out. I'll post more on the show soon.

This Chicago exhibit is groundbreaking in scope, and the first art exhibition that brings together the art by veterans from the NVAM with the paintings and stories about veterans by Ms. Hill-Soldner. All artworks from the NVAM have been created by artists who are veterans of wars from the Vietnam War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The National Veterans Art Museum is the only art museum in the world that focuses on artwork created by veterans, and is locate at 1801 S. Indiana Avenue in Chicago.

More Portraits in Progress

As I continue painting the portraits I have discovered the most relaxed approach to the painting process. This is John Roach, he's a US Navy veteran who served three tours of duty in Vietnam. John was raised in military family so we had a lot to talk about before the portrait began. As you can see from the photos I have posted, John is a direct individual. His direct gaze was something that I wanted to capture in the painting. The next step in the painting process will be to loosely lay in the jacket, shirt and tie. I don't draw on the canvas before painting, instead I proceed directly with the oil on canvas. I find this brings a direct and fresh approach that is reflected in the power of the finished painting. I will post the progress of John's portrait as it develops. By the way John is the 19th veteran in the "Portrait of American Veterans Project". Also I always paint the glasses after the portrait is almost complete, so check back and see how John looks with his glasses. I will contact the 20th veteran soon and schedule his portrait session.

A Break from Painting

Painting is a singular pleasure, one of my favorite activities. With a heavy schedule of exhibits and projects I have lined-up for the next few months I am painting a lot, almost 40 hours a week. There are times when I need a break from the long hours of canvas, oils and brushes, but want to continue working in the studio. Fortunanly I have enough space in my studio that I can work on more than one media, or project at a time. I have two plein air painting easels, I have a small one that I use for a drawing/sketching box that doubles as an easel. It works great and holds drawing supplies such as pencils, color pencils, pastels, conte' crayons, watercolors and a great assortment of rendering supplies at my fingertips. I set-up the easel at the back of my studio, in front of a sculpture pedestal and a large shelving unit laden with art books. This provides an opportunity to work on drawing quickly without taking valuable table space that are normally utilized for teaching classes or laying out papers, stretching canvas and other activities. In the above photo you can see a terra cotta bust that I made a couple of years ago on the pedestal. This was a great subject for a quick charcoal sketch. Drawings and sketches in charcoal are a lot of fun and it was good to return to the media with it's lovely chiascuro effects. I think I'll continue working on more charcoals and take a break from painting when my arms and shoulders become tired from many hours at the easel.

Continuing the Portrait of American Veterans Project

Pictured above and below is my 18th veteran to paint. This is Bert Notheison, I visited his home last week to start on his portrait. Bert and his wife Arlene were so happy to see me and thrilled about Bert's part in the PAVP. Bert's stories are many and fascinating, from his time as a pilot in the US Army Air Corp with the 460th Bomb Group during WWII. I'll post his portrait when it is completed.
As the Portraits of American Veterans Project continues, almost 2 years in process, I have reached a marvelous place. Each portrait has come to represent a singular place and time for each individual, yet occupies a shared place within the whole. I think and most certainly feel, that there will be a complete body of work, and a substantial exhibition by the time I paint the 24th portrait. I began the first portrait of Adam Navarro-Lowery in August 2009. this was the start of a journey that has become incredible in it's scope and depth. I am eternally grateful for all of the generous support of family and friends to keep me working in my studio 5-6 days a week in front of the easel, to complete every detail in each portrait.

In early March I applied to Fractured Atlas fiscal sponsorship for financial assistance in developing Portraits of American Veterans Project into a traveling exhibit. Last week I received the good news that my proposal was approved, so now it's time to look towards the horizon and complete the last of the portraits, and put "the show on the road". Continue following my posts and I'll keep you up to date on how things are progressing.

Painting the Figure From Life in Under 4 Hours

This past Sunday I spent the entire day in the beautiful Sage Gallery with 12 other artists painting a model from life. We started around 10:30 with this lovely ballet pose and wrapped up the day at 4:00. There's nothing more engaging to me than the moments when I am completely absorbed in the painting or drawing process. I loved the color and light enveloping the model and the composition was just right. I will add a few final touches in the studio, but this is a completed oil on 40"x 30" hand stretched canvas painting. I like the freshness and clean look of this piece. Now it's time to get back to the studio and schedule the next veterans for the 18th portrait for my "Portraits of American Veterans Project".

Al Weber the First Marine Veteran I've Painted

Al stopped by my studio a few weeks ago to see the progress on his portrait. I was so happy to see him that I just had to get a picture of him with his portrait. Al is very quiet about his commendations received during his two tours of duty in Vietnam with the 1st Recon Battalion Charlie Company. My Dad was the First Sergeant of 1st Recon Battalion Bravo Company during his first tour of duty in 1965-66.... Enough said.

Keep checking my blog and I'll post the painting of Al with all of his 7 medals placed on the left of the painting. I am honored to paint Al's portrait and represent the commendations that he no longer has, but will be present on his completed portrait.

Join artist Jeanine Hill-Soldner as she demonstrates her unique portrait painting technique, where the likeness of the individual is captured from life in one sitting. Jeanine will work from a live model in oils, while discussing her choice of colors, mediums and the placement of the individual models features on canvas. Ms. Hill-Soldner holds a Masters of Art in Art Ed. and began painting lessons at age 15 in an artists’ studio. She has received many awards and more than 100 juried exhibits in museums and galleries around the US, with many press articles and an Artist Profile featured on PBS nationwide. Her studio is located in the lower level of the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park in Crystal Lake where she paints every day and teaches classes and workshops. Portrait Painting Demo from Live Model

I love painting from life with a real person posing or just being still for a short time. My process and technique are my own. Over time and many years of focused attention in my studio in front of the easel, with brush in hand and palette nearby, my unique process has been evolving as an artist. I don't think there is an easy way to arrive at your own mark, your style that sets you apart from others. I have consistently kept my focus and have not been shy of the hard work and dedication that is required to continually move forward. It's a wonderful life to have a studio where I am able to continue working and inviting people to pose for me and experience the wonders of portraiture.
My son Alex kindly posed for this painting in oils. The gallery is located in the Dole Mansion the building that houses my studio, Soldner Fine Art Studio. The art on the gallery is by artists and teachers , Amber Larsen and Johanna Gullick. My paintings and drawings can be seen on the walls in the background behind me, and to my right. Artist Talk with Jeanine Hill-Soldner at Algoqnuin Library

In addition to my "Portraits of American Veterans" exhibit I will present and Artist Talk in which I will discuss the inspiration that compelled me to develop the Portrait project. Frances Mai Ling and a number of the Veterans whose portraits are represented will be in attendance. I look forward to sharing my work and the stories about the Veterans. My painting process and basic technical information will also be discussed. This promises to be a wonderful community building program with art as the catalyst that starts and continues the dialogue about how military service and those who have served can help us understand how to find peace.

Life Drawing Workshop in My Studio

I will be hosting a Life Drawing Workshop in my studio on Saturday January 8, 10 am - 2 pm. Pictured above is Lee Radtke drawing my son Alex posing in his fencing uniform, this was a lot of fun because it was so different from what we normally draw with the Valley Art Club. Molly will be the model on January 8, she will pose nude for 2 short poses and then a very long pose. This will be an excellent time for working on a finished drawing or painting. Coffee and snacks will be available with a lunch break of 30 minutes so bring a lunch and drink. My studio is located in the Garden level of the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park in Crystal Lake. I have plenty of space and tables, chairs and easels available.

Learn the latest techniques in Acrylics and then
apply them to the creation of several small scale pieces
(8" x 8" or less).

We will transfer photo copies into gels, which can then be painted into or embellished. We'll also use found objects and embed these into different gels and pastes to make mixed media pieces that are very 3d! Using photos and /or objects that relate to a theme is a great way to make personalized art works....or even small scale Christmas presents or ornaments. We'll use glass bead gel, interference and iridescent paints, and many other transparent and opaque gels and pastes. This is a great class to explore the wide variety of Golden products as they apply to mixed media. Bring ribbons, beads, shells, specialty papers, and any small objects for the miniatures.

Drawing Sessions in My Studio

Classes are starting again for winter in my studio. I have drawing sessions from 10:00- 12:00 every Thursday. This is time to spend focused on the fine art of rendering the visual world in drawing media. I love just plain old drawing pencils on paper, it's very relaxing. I am also planning Saturday classes for students interested in exploring painting. Check back soon for my new class schedule.

Here I am talking about the Portraits of American Veterans Project. I was so encouraged by the number of people who attended the event on a cold and damp Sunday in November. Thanks everyone for being there.
One of the oldest Veterans in the Portrait of American Veterans Project is WWII Veteran De Yip G. Louie seated with his daughter Frances Mai Ling.
Allen Jakes is viewing his completed portrait for the first time. Allen is a Vietnam Veteran whose service involved managing a clinic and caring for the wounded. His caring spirit can be seen in the gesture of holding his memory album from Vietnam.
This is Wendy Manning standing next to the portrait of her daughter Capt. Dana Mayer. Dana could not attend the reception, she just returned from her third deployment. She is a transport nurse whose recent tour of duty was in Afghanistan.

Bill Crist is viewing his portrait for the first time. He is a combat veteran who served in Vietnam.

The panoramic photos were taken by Chris O'Neil, one of the Veterans that I painted. Thanks Chris, you are a gentleman and a hero. All of the profiles posted by the paintings are by Frances Mai Ling, who also provided the beautiful piano music and vocals for the reception.

I wanted to share some of the photos that my husband Keith took at the November 21 Artist Talk and Studio Tour. There are quite a few shots so I will post a slide show soon so you can get a sense of the scope of the exhibit and the number of lives that it has touched. I am very honored that I have been able to meet and get to know all of these fine people in the portraits. Through this project I have found a spiritual healing that we all have shared. I am eternally grateful for the gifts that I have received through my art and the many individuals that have supported me on my journey to create a visual record of the Americans that I truly honor and respect for their service to our country. Thank you.

"Portraits of American Veterans: A Continuing Dialogue" Artist Reception November 5

The reception on November 5 for my show was an event to remember. Frances Mai Ling and Kit Valentine added a beautiful ambiance to the evening with their piano and vocal performances. The food and wine kept everyone happy and chatty and I am looking forward to moving this exhibit to many more venues.
Above are a few shots that I was able to capture at the end of the evening as many of the guests had already left and the attending Veterans who are represented in the paintings had a chance to pose for pictures. My friend and professional photographer Robin Pendergrast took some nice shots and I will post those when I receive them. I would love for everyone to see this show!

Portraits of American Veterans Project Exhibit Opens November 3

The opening reception for my show is less than two weeks away and I have a LOT to do to prepare. Frances Mai Ling is working hard to complete the story profiles that will accompany the 15 paintings. I began the paintings and the project in August 2009 with a continuous schedule of meeting with and getting to know the veterans who are represented in the painting. In addition to creating the connections with my new friends, I devoted long hours in the studio painting. All of the long hours of work will be on exhibit for all to see. I have so many people to thank for helping to make the PAVP project possible that I will save that for the next post. For now I have posted a portion of the press release with more details.

“Portraits of American Veterans Project; was created by Jeanine Hill-Soldner as a continuation of her work with art about war and veterans. The exhibit incorporates original oil paintings of local American Veterans with photographs and stories about the veterans told in their own words. The veterans meet with the artist in her studio for an interview, a photo shoot and sketching session before the paintings begins. This project is in the second phase of representing American Veterans in narrative context where the paintings and stories provide a visual dialogue, and a connection between the viewer and the veteran. Ms. Hill-Soldner plans to include veterans of all ages, both men and women. The second phase of the project will exhibit in November 2010 in the Sage Gallery, Lakeside Legacy Arts Park in Crystal Lake.

In addition to the art by Ms. Hill-Soldner there will be an exhibit of art from participating veterans in the Vet Art Project Chicago, and Chicago area veterans. Ms. Hill-Soldner is co-curating the show with Army veteran Edgar Gonzalez Beaza. The art will be by veterans from wars in Vietnam, Kosovo, First Gulf War, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This art will exhibit in the historic Dole Mansion Gallery. Meet the artists.

Battledress Exhibit and Lt Dan Weekend in Beaufort, SC October 1 - 3, 2010

The Battledress artist reception was held on Thursday October 1 with art on exhibit by women veterans who have served in the US Military. I was honored to be invited to show with these warrior women. The exhibit will now travel with stops in galleries and museums around the country. Follow my blog and I'll keep updating the exhibition schedule.

In the above photo my Mom and I are posing next to Easter Sunday 1965 at the Charles Street Gallery in Historic Beaufort SC. Mom is standing next to the painting that depicts her in 1965 with her friends in front of our military housing at Kaneohe, MCAS in Oahu, Hawaii.

The South Carolina beach from Huntington Island State Park. You can see my husband and father in law (a Vietnam Veteran and retired career US Marine) are seen walking in the distance. My nephew Michael, who is also a USMC veteran was also at the event.

Gary Senise and the Lt. Dan Band performed a free concert for to honor our men and women currently serving and show support for the troops who have been severely injured since 9/11. The concert was held at Riverfront Park. The Beaufort Shrimp Festival was on the same night, serving the best shrimp that I have tasted in a very long time.

This is the start of the Lt. Dan Ride which was held at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort. I was in awe ans so inspired at the sight of all of those heroes riding the 11 mile loop around the end of the runway. The entire event brought tears to my eyes as I watched and cheered for these wounded warriors. I felt honored and quite humbled by these men and women who have overcome their injuries. The Ride was hosted by the Lady Island Cycling Club, the Independence Fund and the City of Beaufort.
My husband Keith and I, arrived at the MCAS at 06:00 hrs to help with set-up and I'm glad we did. There was a lot to do and some friendly people to meet.

This is Laura Sellinger, the founder of the Battledress Exhibit, a US Army, Iraq War Veteran. Laura is a strong woman and a delightful person to know. Thanks Laura, you are amazing!

This is the Old South at it's best. I took this photograph from atop a fort constructed during the late 1800's for defense of the river during the Spanish and American War. So much history is tucked into the most unlikely places.

Studio Notes: My New Painting Cart

This is a great new find for any studio. Stainless steel, lots of space and sturdy wheels.

I move around my studio quite a bit when I'm working, and I usually have more than one painting at a time in process. I prefer studio furniture with wheels, this allows for a lot of flexibility in my work space. The above painting table has been with me for about 10 years and has served well, but it has become quite wobbly from rolling around on the uneven 90 year old floors in my studio. I found a replacement at IKEA. I love the new stainless steel "kitchen cart" the large wheels and workspace is just what I needed. I need functional. I think commercial kitchens have the best furniture for artists, there's no fluff, just solid hard working furniture.

While I'm working I utilize at least 3 wheeled painting tables at a time and 4 easels. All of the carts in my studio are steel and have at least three shelves. I sometimes work with 2-3 palettes and can use up to 20 brushes in one day. I like my easels too, they are wood, easy to move around and have wheels of course. My system may not work for someone else, but after many years of committed studio work I've found this to be the best system for me for now.

Busy Weeks of Art

This is the "Next Wave Artist Salon" in Elgin, I'm glad I was a part of it. The experience was energizing and I met some wonderful people. This is an event I will continue to support!
This is my daughter Michelle posing in front of her portrait I painted from a pic I took of her seated in the window of our hotel in London several years ago. Next to that is my self portrait in my studio painted from life. I have a ton of pics from my travels around the world, one of these days I'll start creating new ways to depict this side of my life in paint. Until then I'll just keep painting.

The past two weeks have been so busy that I'm glad to have a Saturday to rest and recharge. There have been art receptions, all day life drawing at Palette and Chisel in Chicago with Pat and Jackie, life drawing with Valley Art Club, evening parties for an old friend visiting from out of town, driving to Chicago for delivery of artwork to the National Veterans Art Museum for shipment to a show in Beaufort, S. C., and then the next day delivering the shipping crate for the 4' x 6' painting, delivery of artwork (shown above) for a weekend show in Elgin the "Next Wave Artist Salon with a Friday and Saturday reception to attend, then pick-up on the artwork on Sunday, dinner with the Chairman and the Director of the Veterans Assistance Commission and then a presentation of my "Portrait of American Veterans Project" to the Woodstock VFW, and with all of that 3 doctor appointments and 35 hours of painting time in my studio each week.
WHEW! Now I'll come up for air and take a nap.

Workshop for Contemporary Artists 26th Annual Exhibit

The 26th Annual Workshop for Contemporary Artists Exhibit was held last night a the Old Courthouse Art Center in Woodstock, IL. The OCAC has four galleries so there were artists from the Real People Show, Claymirth, and Old Courthouse Figurative Art League with their friends and followers at the reception. This made for one of the best art openings that I have had the pleasure to be a part of. I tried to take pictures, but as with all art shows where I am one of the exhibitors, I would rather talk to visitors and share my art than take pictures of the crowd. So here are a few quick snapshots from the evening reception that was attended by a standing room only crowd.

The members of WCA are myself, Judith Nahill, Nancy Seidler, Lynn Carlson, Patricia Tanner, Alice White, Doris Davis-Gallagher and Rita Kay Halvorsen. Patricia Tanner and I have been members of this dynamic and incredible artist group for 14 years. The other members have been showing their art together for more than 26 years. I love the ladies and our group, they have encouraged me to grow as an artist through their unwavering support.

The Importance of Supporting Fellow Artists

Here we are, three friends and fellow artists attending the artist's reception for Pat's first Solo Exhibit. Pat couldn't be there due to a teaching commitments, so we decided that we would be a welcoming committee for Pat in her absence. There was live music and good food and a number of art lovers in attendance. We had a very enjoyable time and felt good that we could be there for our friend.

I make every effort to attend art receptions for all of the artists I know in the Chicago area. I think it's really important that we support one another and show sincere appreciation for the creative and professional accomplishments of others. I am always pleased to see other artists attending my receptions. Taking the time to attend receptions of other artists I think it builds a stronger artist community. There is a time for being alone to do the soul searching, and roll-up your sleeves work of the artist, and there is the time for enjoying the fruits of our labor. The support of peers in the artist community has always kept the arts alive, and in these tough times we artists need all the support we can get.

So please attend all artists' receptions you can, you could be a spark that keeps the flame of artistic expression burning!

Challenges Beyond the Portrait

This is Bill, he is a friend an artist, and a Vietnam Veteran. Bill visited my studio recently to share with me his stories, his drawings, and to pose for his portrait. Bill has a strong presence, a square jaw and wounded warrior eyes. During the course of my painting process I feel that I am taken to a place beyond the traditional portrait. Or I should say, I feel a responsibility to the individual to honor their spirit, as well as their image. This for me is a huge challenge. I want to represent the person in a profoundly honest way, to move into a place where the camera and "photo realism" is left behind. I am honored to take on this challenge, so that every day I focus on taking my work beyond that which I have done before. Hard work, by all means, and I love every minute of it.

Fabulously Focused reception at Tall Grass Arts Association

This past Friday I attended the "Fabulously Focused" Gallery Artists Exhibition at the Tall Grass Artists Association Gallery in Park Forest, IL. This was a true delight visiting the gallery for the first time after delivering my work for the show. The space is huge and the show was beautiful with work in many media. My Mom was able to attend with me, since she's visiting from Florida for a few weeks. All of the artists were friendly and talked about their work, sharing their ideas and happy to welcome new artists to the gallery. There were nice light snack and wine. I look forward to future show and activities at this upscale and friendly gallery. The exhibit runs through September 19 so please stop by and see the works and visit the adjouning gift shop.

"Battle Dress a Woman's View" Reception May 29 at the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago

The exhibit "Battle Dress a Woman's View' is designed to enlighten the public community to the complex views of women who serve in the United States Military.
This ground breaking exhibit was the brain child of Iraqi war veteran and artist Laura Sellinger.

Laura was given a camera by Kimo Williams of the Lt. Dan Band, and instructed to show the world her views. This is a personal project funded by the Independence Fund that has the potential to grow into an annual exhibit. Proceeds will go back to he Independence Fund to help other wounded veterans in need.

The exhibit that is now on view at the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago through August 2010. After the Chicago exhibit "Battle Dress" will

move to the Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, South Carolina, the home of Paris Island Marine Corps Training Center, and location for the filming of "Forrest Gump". The opening reception will be held on October 2. During the weekend reception severly disabled veterans from across the U. S. will ride in the Lt. Dan Ride culminating with a performance by Gary Senice and the Lt. Dan Band. This will be a weekend to remember and you can bet I will be there. I am so honored and humbled that my work has been chosen to exhibit with that of women veterans. Thank you.

Last Wednesday was a Vet Art Project "mini performance/ exhibit" at the Chicago Cultural Center. There were performances by some of the best actors in Chicago theater, as well as the Veterans whose stories they performed. I took along four of my "Portrait of American Veterans Project" oil paintings. As you can see by the photo Matt Ping was pleased with his portrait. I too was quite satisfied to find the likeness was how I intended. This was amazing!

Sage Gallery "Memories of an Era: Reflections of Our Time" November 2005

My first solo show in 1973 at an art festival in downtown Jacksonville, Florida.

I first exhibited my art work in 1973, and have continued finding venues, or creating new exhibition spaces throughout my life. I don’t see any point in waiting for someone to “discover my art” I have to create opportunities along the way. In the process doors have opened for other artists behind me. Creating a life in art and sharing with others, what could be better than that?

I have already posted a brief overview describing my experiences with exhibits in Chicago and the near suburban art galleries. These have been good opportunities that I’ve enjoyed immensely. But there are galleries worth noting in the northwest Chicago suburbs.

First and foremost are the Sage and Dole galleries located in the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park in Crystal Lake. My studio is in this historic and grand structure. I am blessed with the opportunity to work is an amazing space with ample natural light and 900 square feet and a double “slop sink” within the studio. This is definitely my kind of “heaven”.

The galleries are located one floor above my studio, so they are a convenient for the installation of my work. On the first floor there is also the lobby, and a long cavernous hallway available for visiting and resident artists to hang work. My paintings are always available for viewing and sale in the long hallway leading to my studio, on the garden level. I will show a collection of my oil paintings and drawings, in the lobby gallery during the month of August.

My largest body of work and first major solo exhibit “Memories of an Era; Reflections of Our Time” showed in the spacious Sage Gallery for two months in 2005. The response to my work was overwhelmingly positive and very welcome by the community. In 2008 I showed another large body of work in a solo exhibit “Pilgrimage and Passages” filling the Sage Gallery. The most celebrated painting in the collection “Slivers of Light” has garnered quite a lot of attention. Then in 2009 my groundbreaking exhibit “Portraits of American Veterans: A Visual Dialogue” exhibited with a collection of art works by Veterans from Chicago and Crystal Lake. The National Veterans Art Museum from Chicago exhibited a powerful collection of works by Veterans from around the U.S., in the Dole Gallery in conjunction with "Porrtraits of American Veterans".

Annually I have installed my work in the Sage Gallery marking progress in my art making practice. The staff and resident artists are always friendly and helpful, so I highly recommend the Sage and Dole Galleries; they are the best galleries in the North west Chicago suburbs. And please remember, my show “Portraits of American Veterans Project Exhibit II” be in November with the artist reception on Friday November 7 from 5:00- 7:30 PM. My work will be in the Sage Gallery and Veterans who create art are invited to exhibit in the Dole Gallery. The month of November is now Honouring America's Veterans month at the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park.

I also love to show in the Old Courthouse Art Center in Woodstock, this is a fantastic space that will be reviewed in the next installment, so please check back soon.

My Experience with Chicago Art Galleries

The following post was originally written for my dear friend Patricia Tanner who is now curating exhibits in a new and "outside the box" gallery space. Follow my blog for more info on this new and exciting gallery.

The gallery scene in Chicago offers a wide selection of original artworks by local and international artists. In these hard economic times it’s important that small businesses, such as galleries be visitor friendly and of course artist friendly. To do otherwise seems counterintuitive. This brings me to the Chicago art gallery scene. Each of the galleries where I have exhibited has been a part of the vibrant art scene in the City.

I’ll start with my favorite of the galleries in which I’ve exhibited my work over the past 13 years. One of my all time favorite galleries closed last year. The Peter Jones Gallery was a vital epicenter of the art community in Chicago. Located in the Ravenswood community, Pete Jones maintained an open and friendly space where monthly rotating exhibits brought the best out in the artists and the art community. I exhibited my oil paintings with the Chicago Women’s Caucus for Art on a number of occasions and loved the ambience and large crowds attracted to the receptions.

Another Chicago gallery where I have exhibited is on North Avenue, the Tom Robinson Studio and Gallery. Tom hosted the Ethereal Fauna show this past October as part of the Chicago Artists Month. The location is easy to find with ample free parking, and within walking distance of the EL. There are a number of good restaurants on North and Damen avenues, so you can enjoy a nice meal along with visiting the gallery. The space is bright and clean with hardwood floors and plenty of natural light. You also have several other small galleries along North Avenue and the Flat Iron Arts Building is just down the street from the Tom Robinson Gallery. Tom is an artist, and a friendly, gracious host..

Other galleries on my resume include the non profit artist run ARC. I have always found that exhibiting at ARC to be a pleasure. The opening receptions and large crowds that are attracted to the openings bring fun and excitement to the exhibition. I would include WomanMade with the caliber of gallery and high quality art that ARC represents. Director and founder Beate Minkovski takes care of the artists, the art and all visitors who enter her Milwaukee Avenue gallery.

Zhou B is a huge and exciting gallery, a bit rustic and rough with so much character that it can only add to the art viewing experience. The Flat Iron Arts Building I mention above is home to a small lovely gallery, the Accidental Gallery and plentiful exhibition space in the commons areas. This is a treat for those looking for a friendly, trendy art scene. Gallery on Lake is also a good, roomy space with friendly and helpful staff. I must also mention the Hothouse gallery which unfortunately succumbed to hard economic times. Hothouse was an exciting and happening venue with live jazz and exemplary exhibitions.

In addition to “city” galleries I have exhibited my work in several near suburban spaces that have I found wonderful experiences for exposure. The University of Illinois School of Public Health Gallery, Chicago Athenaeum, Koehnline Museum of Art Oakton Community College, and Prairie State College, Aurora Public Arts Commission Gallery, Barrington Area Arts Council Gallery and the Lake County Museum.

And finally, my favorite of all exhibition spaces in Chicago is the National Veterans Art Museum. Although not officially a “gallery” the NVAM collects, archives and exhibits the most powerful, meaningful and vibrant art that you will find anywhere. I highly recommend that anyone visiting Chicago visit the NVAM on South Indiana Avenue. My largest body of work “Memories of an Era, Reflections of Our Time” exhibited for a year in the spacious second floor gallery and is now on temporary loan to the Museum and available for traveling exhibitions.

I took time to complete the portrait of Julie in my studio. Her eyes are clear, intense and wonderful to paint. Each face is different so I approach each portrait with a fresh palette and attitude. There is an element of discovery with each portrait, how am I to reveal the individual character of the person. Revealing the person within the paint and pushing the media as far as I can, makes the portrait an exciting and always challenging subject.

This is how the portrait of Julie looks after about 2 hours of work, with lots of distractions.

Last night was First Friday, and Art in Action at Lakeside Legacy Arts Park. Amber Larson, artist and owner of Creative Artistry School of Art, brought all of the resident artists, and teachers together to share their art process, and to promote their classes. My friend and fellow Lakeside resident artist Julie Tomaso, and I worked together the way artists have for centuries. Julie was my artists' model while I painted her portrait in oil on canvas.

The Sage Gallery was certainly not a traditional studio setting, so I arranged a few props from my studio for a "virtual studio". My paintings are on at the far end of the Gallery, so that is where I set up my "stage". I wanted visitors to feel as if they were peering into a working artist's studio. I found the process to be a lot of fun, and full of challenges. Julie was a great model, whose quiet repose contrasted the crowded and noisy gallery.

I have demonstrated my painting process to students, and in public for many years, so this evening provided me with a chance to revisit the rigors of demstration. I took some photos of Julie, and will complete the portrait in my studio.

I have found that when you try new ways of presenting your art and consistently define yourself in the most positive light, growth occurs on a personal level that others naturally respond to. This for me is very rewarding.

Phil is a Vietnam Veteran who visited my studio in January for his portrait. I've known Phil, his wife Wendy and their daughter Brittany for many years through our kids who were in the same class at St. Margaret Mary School. Phil spoke on many occasions about his background as a Veitnam Veteran. I am honored that he found the time to share his experience and stories with me and now these will be part of the Portrait of American Veterans Project.

Virgil Mathis viewed his oil portrait for the first time on Wednesday night at the Chicago Cultural Center. I attended a Vet Art Project program and was so glad that I took three of my completed paintings. Virgil was overjoyed with the painting. As you can see his kindess and strength are evident in his face and strong hands. This was one of the most rewarding experiences that I have encountered in my work as an artist.

Portrait of Sharon, My Little Sister

My youngest sister, Sharon, is an Air Force Veteran, she is the 6th veteran for me to paint. She came to Chicago recently for a visit from her sunny home in Hastings, Florida. We enjoyed our time together and shared old family stories. She also shared her story about her time in the Air Force while stationed in the Phillipines during the Phillipino civil war in the early 1980's. We spent a day in my stuio while she sat for this portrait. I am very pleased with the progress on this piece, and found it to be the most rewarding of all of the portraits I've painted so far.
The next veteran I will paint is Phil. He is a Vietnam veteran and he too has stories, and memories of his war experience. Phil visited my studio two weeks ago, so I have a good start on capturing his character on canvas. I'll post his painting as it progresses.

Steamy Studio

The steam pipe in the 1928 era radiator located in my studio was frozen when the steam finally made it's way into the old system......a boiling flood soon covered the floor releasing a veritable sauna. Fortunantly nothing was damaged and there was help from maintenance, staff and board member of Lakeside to help get everything cleaned-up and under control. At this writing I'm still getting reorganized after the mess. AHHHH, winters in the Midwest!

Vet Art Project Family Theater Program

Lakeside Legacy Arts Park in Crystal Lake hosted the Vet Art Project program: Family Theater and Potluck on Saturday November 21. What an honor for the Lakeside to play host for this innovative and healing program. Many thanks to the Board and Staff of the LLAP.

These are some of the finest individuals I have ever met and feel honored that I have the opportunity to depict their image in my art.

Portraits of American Veterans; A Visual Dialogue Opening Reception

The First Friday reception for "Portraits of American Veterans" and Works from the National Veterans Art Museum at the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park on November 6 was a wonderful event. With about 500 art lovers in attendance we all enjoyed an evening to connect and share art and stories and friendships new and old. Portaits of American Veterans Project

Portraits of America’s Veterans Project” incorporates original oil paintings of American Veterans with the photographs and stories about the veterans told in their own words. This project is in the beginning phase with a long term goal of representing American Veterans in narrative context where the paintings and stories will provide a visual dialogue, and a connection between the viewer and the veteran.

Goal:
To represent Veterans who served in America’s foreign conflicts, and chronicle their stories, many whose lives have been defined or shaped by war. The long tem goal is to create a visual “archive”, through collaborations with the veterans and artist. The stories and painted portraits will eventually comprise a traveling exhibition.

If you are a veteran, willing to share your stories and take some time to visit the studio of Jeanine Hill-Soldner in Crystal Lake, or If you are unable to travel, arrangements will be made for a visit and interview, photo shoot and sketching session. The artist will then produce the oil painting her art studio.

Jeanine Hill-Soldner is the artist, whose Dad was a Marine Corps veteran who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam., The artist’s exhibits include the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago, featured on PBS; the artist’s profile, documenting her family's story during the Vietnam War.

Here we all are after the first phase of hanging our group show in the Old Courthouse Art Center in Woodstock. Were lunching at the Petite Crepere in the lovely outdoor courtyard, in front of the old jail that houses the restaurant. Adjacent to the Petite Crepere is the Old Courthouse Art Center, which can be seen behind our group. The historic Woodstock Square is a wonderful part of the Midwest, alive with artists, and restaurants, shops and the Woodstock Opera House. We always enjoy a well attended artist reception in the many years that we have exhibited here.

Summer Break?

The next three weeks I will not teach classes in my studio. Instead I am working furiosly to complete some mixed media boxes for the Workshop for Contemporary Artist "25th Anniversary Group Show" at the Old Courthouse Art Center in Woodstock. The show runs from August 6 - September 29. The artist reception will be on Saturday September 22, 6:30 pm- 9:00 pm.

I also have several new works due in August for a show titled "Ethereal Fauna, the Artist's Muse" that will exhibit during the month of October for Chicago Artists Month at the Tom Robinson Studio Gallery 2416 W. North Ave. This looks to be a be an exciting collaborative exhibit that challenges a group of Chicago artists to create new works on a common theme. I'm enjoying the change of media and love the collaborative process.

National Exhibition in California

I just shipped these two paintings to a nationally juried show at the Galeria Tonantzin Center for Arts and Humanities in San Juan Bautista, California. I was very excited to be accepted in this national exhibition.

I love trees and find they are so full of life and change. And like people, no two trees are alike, each one developing their own characteristics over time. The trees represented above are part of a series I painted while working in my Algonquin studio of 71/2 years. The property where my studio was located has since been razed for new development, but the trees represent in these paintings are still standing proud and tall.

Revisiting the Small Format

I will show my work in a solo exhibit at the Barrington Area Library March 29- June 19, 2009. The space has only two walls large enough to accomodate my large works, so I am producing a new collection of small oils to fit the space. I'm actually enjoying the ease and speed at which I work on small pieces. The title is "Sight Seeting" and the theme is light and fun to explore. I have an enormous number of photos that I have taken over the years from my travels throughout the world, so this show opens-up an opportunity to revisit those images and paint them as I remember the scenes. The process is a relaxing break from my labor intensive, large format paintings. I find if I revisit older themes in my work I think about where I'm going to go with new works. I certainly have been having a lot of fun painting in small format.

I am continueing my work that has been developing, I think, for my entire life, with veterans and their families. I am a child of a veteran so my work is authentic, and continually transforming as I find more connections with my art and the world around me.
Through my commitment to Veterans issues and understanding that art is powerful, healing and empowering, and engages individuals in a deep and profound way. My work with veterans and their families, has come about through Lisa Rosenthal and her groundbreaking program the Vet Art Project. Lisa, Jessa Carlstrom, and all of the artists working in colloaboration with veterans to promote community building through art in all of it's forms.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2009, 6:30 pm- 9:00 pm in room 1G at the Chicago Cultural Center. I will present a workshop for veterans titled "Blind Contour Self- Portraits" . Through this relaxing, meditative process the participants will draw two self-protraits unlike any they have ever seen, or experieced. FREE

On May 30-31, 2009 my work will be on exhibit at the 8th Annual Reclaiming Our Heritage Festival located at the Zaplockiva Medical (VA) , 500 W National Ave, Milwaukee, WI. Painting from Life

This past Sunday I enjoyed an intense 5 hours drawing and painting session with fellow artist friends. Our model was Veronica, a dear friend whose beautiful Flamenco costume was perfect with it's red hue and wonderful flowing lines. As you can see the painting is a quick study painted in oils on primed 300 lb. cold press Arches paper.

I was visiting my family in Florida this past weekend, and realized that my art work is on exhibit in family and friend's homes, throughout the state. I thought it would be fun to start posting my "archival work", for those who have inquired about my early paintings.

I painted the "Skipjack" for my Grandfather in 1972, at the age of 15. Mom now exhibits the painting in her house, and tells all visitors about how much my Grandfather loved sailing, and that this painting was very special to him. I am so glad that my family always supported my art efforts, perhaps that's why I enjoy mentoring young artists, and supporting art in the community.

Vet Art Project Review

I feel very honored to have been a part of the Vet Art Project. I loved collaborating with other artists on this profound and positive project. The arts in all their forms: visual, literary, theatrical, and musical all came together on one amazing night at the Chicago Cultural Center. To be in the presence of so much positive energy was a powerful experience that I will never forget. So much was achieved by a committed group of artists who donted their time and talents to help our Veterans heal and deal with the wounds they carry from their war experience. The caring and compassion expressed by the artists for the Veterans was genuine and heartfelt. The arts heal from the inside out, by reaching our deepest and most complex sources of being. I plan to continue working with the Vet Art Project and other veteans projects that integrate art into the healing and tratment of vets and their families.

Thank you Lisa and Jessa for everything you have done to help our wounded warriors.

Red

Now the painting is complete. The addition of red has completed this large and complex image. Red is a hue that has mesmerized artists since the Upper Paleolithic time when red ochres where applied to the walls of ancient, mysterious caves.

This painting will be included in the February 23 performance at he Studio Theatre in the Chicago Cultural Center as part of the Vet Art Project.

Twice a month I meet with a group of artists to spend 3 wonderful hours drawing the figure. The quick snap shots that you see here show my son posing in his fencing uniform. We thought it would be an interesting change to draw a clothed figure wearing an intersting outfit. Here you can see some of my completed oil paintings and my most recent series in the early stages of painting.

New Work on Exhibit in February at the Chicago Cultural Center

This is my Mom, Maggie, modeling for me in my studio. I painted this in two sittings totaling about 2 hours. This simple statement I soon developed into a larger painting which has to do with women and war. This is a topic that is prevelant in my work and will always emerge in varous forms throughout my life and art.

During the month of February I will show my latest painting "The Sergeant Major's Wife, 1918-2008". This is a 4 panel oil on canvas painting measuring 48" high and 86" in wide. I painted this in less than a month. There was was a deadline for completion, but I also had to paint this fast in order to capture the intuitive quality that a subject of such importance engenders. The inspiration for this work came after I painted my Mom's portrait from life, while she modeled in my studio. Working from old, faded and out of focus family photgraphs I developed these almost life size figures into vibrant color.

Each panel represents members of my family. The left panel is my Grandmother and Grandfather circa 1918, the second panel is my Grandmother and Dad, age 15, on graduation day from the USMC boot camp in 1943. In the third panel my parents are shown on their wedding day in 1954 and the far right is my Mom, alone... thus "The Sergeant Major's Wife, 1918-2008".

New Work, So Many Books

Continuing with works that reflect my travels, I have been working on another 40" x 60" oil on canvas painting. This new painting depicts a used book sale under the pedestrian bridge along the Thames River near the Tate Modern Museum in London. My daughter had enjoyed an afternoon at the Museum. We happened upon a book sale while walking back to our hotel. This painting is nearly complete. Working out the complexity of the image has been very challenging. I have really enjoyed the process of developing the illusion of deep space and resolving relationships between the figures from the foreground to background. The feeling of calm and quiet present in this moment, in the midst of a bustling city like London, is an experience that I will always remember.

Did You See Me on ABC Television?

If you were watching Wife Swap on ABC Friday November 21 you would have seen me teaching an acrylic painting class to one of the stars. That's right, Denise Berwick came to my studio in September with a film crew and director from the ABC Television show Wife Swap. The producer of the show called me on a Tuesday asking if I wanted to be on Wife Swap by teaching painting to one of the stars. It sounded like a lot of fun and a good opportunity to meet Denise and the film crew, so I said sure. I had about 12 hours to prepare my studio for the film sequence that was featured on the show. Tokens, Flag Vignettes

These flag paintings are 3 from a series of six. They are oil on canvas and each one measures 12" x 12". I painted these a few months after 9/11 when I saw tattered flags displayed in front of homes and businesses. There have been many interpretations of the meaning of these paintings, and conjecture into why I painted them I found these individual flags to be quite beautiful in their simplicity and power. Since I was raised in a military family, the American flag is a very dominant symbol from my past and still resonates with me today.

Dark Pieta was painted from a very out of focus photo that I shot while on a hurried tour through St. Peters Basilica in the Vatican. I love architecture and the contrast between the people at the bottom of the painting and the towering architecture. This is part of Pilgrimage and Passages, a Spiritual Journey.

On the train leaving Cologne, Mary and the girls were tired yet excited about the adventures ahead on their tour of Europe. I wanted to capture the unusual space and light within the train and the compressed space containing the figures.

This is the latest completed painting in Pilgrimage and Passages depicting Theresa, Mary, Bob and Donna outside the Cologne train station in Germany. I had a lot of fun working on this piece, although considering that it is 4'x 6' it was truly a challenge.

St. George and the Dragon.

Here I am with my family and German friends while we enjoy ice cream in Stockholm.

Here is another version of St. George and the Dragon. This is carved from oak and elk antlers are used for the horns and wings on the dragon.

These are my kids enjoying the touristy shops on Stockholm.

I have been taking a figure sculpting class, so this bronze captured my attention.

Water is a dominant feature of Sweden as can be seen in this reflection of a buliding in a canal Stockholm

Here are a few quick views of the marvelous city of Stockholm, Sweden. I found the people friendly and happy to share their city with travelers. The public transportation is excellent, making it quite easy to get around the city and explore it's historic streets and buildings. The water taxis were the most wonderful way to see the city from the water.

As with most European cities art can be found in every park and plaza. Public art is part of the fabric of life in Stockholm. The Swedes appreciate their artistic heritage and enjoy living with the art everyday in their communities. I absolutely love it, how refreshing!

Globe Trekking in Europe

I will take a break from blogging for a few weeks while my family and I go on a much needed vacation in Europe. We are planning a 5 day visit to Stockholm, Sweden, where our German friends will take us on a tour of the city, surrounding lakes and countryside. I'm looking forward to sampling the smorgasboords and enjoying the country for it's unique and timeless qualities.

After touring museums and soaking-up the beauty of Sweden we will move on to Dublin, Ireland. This will be our 4th visit to the "emerald isle". We'll drive to Castlbar on the West Coast in County Clare. If all goes as planned we will arrive at our dear friends, the O'Malley's, home just in time for the party after the christening of the youngest of the O'Malley clan. We will enjoy the open and warm hospitality that our Irish friends. A lovely cottage will await us on the the beach overlooking the Atlantic from the "other side of the pond".

My camera, sketch books, pencils, watercolors and fresh open eyes will be at the ready for the entire trip. Check my blog to see the photos, sketches and watercolors. As the months pass I will develop the images into large scale oil paintings.

Life is an adventure and I don't want to miss a minute of it.

PBS WTTW 11 Chicago, Feature

This is a still shot from a TV program where my work was featured. I will post the video segment from my appearance on the PBS program Artbeat on Chicago Tonight which appeared on February 5, 2008. I was not aware that the segment had aired until recently when I checked the archive for WTTW Chicago Tonight. I ordered a copy of the DVD, and will post it when it is edited and prepared for the internet. The film crew did an excellent job of filming my work and the work by the other artists at the NVVAM. I'm Offering a New Graduate Level Course for Art Teachers

In addition to the Open Studio Sessions and occasional Workshops that I offer in my studio I will be working with the Art Teachers from District 47 this fall. I have many years of art program development and implementation experience at St. Margaret Mary School in Algonquin, I will now develop curriculum art programs with art teachers from the local schools.

The course title is "Curriculum Development: Art, Culture and Community, Integrative Strategies. " This will be a curriculum development course that will integrate concepts of art, culture and community in the elementary and middle school classroom. Teachers will develop lesson plans that address the need for exposing students to the art of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Hands-on activities will reinforce the concepts and process that teachers will then translate into their classroom lesson plans.

I am looking forward to working with teachers and creating art with them. We will draw, paint, and create 3D pieces. This gives me a chance to teach experienced artists/ educators. It will be exciting to see the teachers take the art making process to a whole new level.

I will post the weekly plans on my blog. I hope to provide photos of the art works and keep a running log on the teacher's projects.

Charles S. Dole Portrait 36" x 24" oil on linen

I was commissioned by John Coonen in 2005 to paint a portrait of the 19th century Chicago wheat baron Charles Sydney Dole. Mr. Dole built the beautiful Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake, Illinois. As with all of my commissioned paintings, and especially those of historic figures, research was important before beginning the painting. There is 0nly one image of Charles Dole in the McHenry County Historical Society archives.

Working from the postage stamp sized newspaper clipping dated 1865 provided little visual reference for this 36" x 24" painting. Rather than relying upon visual references for the portrait I pieced together clues or meaningful objects that would describe the man Charles Dole.

Understanding the style of clothing and type of fabric from the late 19th century U.S. was

important aspect of the representation. The riding crop in his hand represents the horses and stable he owned, and so loved to watch from his roof top copula of the mansion. Charles Dole was an entrepetuer, and developed the first wheat sorting system that equipped train cars transporting wheat from the Midwest to the East coast. Note the books on his desk and the wheat decorative element on his chair. In the photo of Charles Dole it appears that his forehead was quite high, so that may be a distinguishing characteristic that Charles Dole would appreciate in his portrait.

The painting is installed over the fireplace mantle in the newly refurbished dining room of the Dole Mansion. The height where the painting is hung and unusual lighting make an accurate photograph of the painting challenging, however this photo gives you an idea of what Charles Dole must have looked like around 1990 when he was at the prime of his life.

New Work

As my studio work has been progressing I have developing in an interesting juxtaposition between the figures and their environment. Space is opening around the figure with light and reflected color that draws the viewer into the world partly seen and partly imagined. The places are real yet the figure is placed in ambiguous relationshops with their surroundings. I'm working hard and enjoying every minute of the process.
